The FRCB-IDIBAPS is committed to promoting more sustainable practices to reduce the considerable impact that research activity has on the environment. This is why the Sustainability Commission was established in mid-2022.
The commission’s work has included the creation of a manual of good practices, which includes actions that can be applied both in the workplace and at home to reduce the environmental impact of our work and personal activity. You can read the manual by clicking here. It is a living document, which will be updated and modified. If you have any suggestions, you can send them to: SUSTAINABILITY@recerca.clinic.cat.
Apart from preparing the manual, IDIBAPS has taken other types of action. Some examples include:
- The installation of recyclable containers for type III (biological) waste in the CEK building.
- The use of blue gowns in the cultivation rooms to avoid single-use gowns.
- The collection of loads of coffee and delivery to green recycling points.
- The gathering of plastic caps for sustainability and solidarity.
- The collection and cleaning of expanded polystyrene boxes and icepacks that are received daily and delivered to a distribution company for reuse.
- The use of timers on laboratory devices that are “sensitive” to being left on all night unnecessarily (microscopes, water baths, centrifuges, etc.).
- A campaign to change the temperature of the -80ºC freezers, which had previously been set to -75ºC to -70ºC.
- The use of recycled paper and doubled-sided printing in black and white by default on institutional printers.
- Organic collection in the CEK canteen.
- The use of glass bottles for the water served at organised catering.
