Josep Dalmau described the first autoimmune encephalitis in 2007. Today, 17 types of this disorder are known, 11 of which have been identified in the laboratory he leads. His research has defined and transformed the field of autoimmune neurology and has had a major impact on diagnosing and treating patients with autoimmune neurological diseases worldwide. Among others, Dalmau is also a member of the US National Academy of Medicine and has recently received prestigious awards such as the Camillo Golgi Award from the European Academy of Neurology and the ‘Scientific Breakthrough 2023’ Award from the American Brain Foundation.
The agreement with the CaixaResearch Institute is another step in the close relationship between IDIBAPS and Fundació ”la Caixa”, which has been funding research projects by Josep Dalmau’s research group and other researchers, as well as institutional projects, for years. Fundació ”la Caixa” will invest around 100 million euros in the construction of the new CaixaResearch Institute complex, which is also being funded by the European Investment Bank (EIB). This new institute aims to be the first research centre in Spain dedicated entirely to interdisciplinary and applied immunology. Once it is fully operational by 2033, it is expected to house over 40 research groups and scientific and technical service units.
