Dr. Ezquerra and Dr. Fernandez-Santiago had previously reported that the expression of certain microRNAs is altered in the serum of patients with REM behavior sleep disorder (RBD), before the onset of Parkinson's disease. Now, they will analyze the expression of microRNAs in serum in asymptomatic carriers of the pathogenic mutation G2019S in the LRRK2 gene, associated with a high risk of Parkinson’s disease. The project also aims to identify biomarkers of progression in the prodromal stage of Parkinson's disease that could be clinically useful for its prediction.

Dr. Mario Ezquerra and Dr. Ruben Fernandez-Santiago, researchers at the Neurodegenerative Diseases IDIBAPS team, have received a grant from The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research (MJFF). They are the principal investigators of the project MicroRNAs as biomarkers of the prodromal stage of Parkinson's disease. The aim of this study is to evaluate the early deregulation of microRNAs in asymptomatic people at high risk of Parkinson's disease. This project is part of the MJFF program named "Improved biomarkers and clinical outcome measures", it will last two years with a budget of $ 215,000.
