On June 5, 2024, the resolutions of the Special Doctoral Awards for the 2021/2022 promotion were announced. These awards are aimed at doctors who have obtained cum laude mention in the defense of their thesis in the academic year specified by the call.
Leonardo Dalla Porta defended his thesis titled "Modeling emergent rhythmic activity in the cerebral cortex" on October 7, 2022, as part of the PhD program in Computational and Applied Physics at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC). In his thesis, using computational models and data analysis techniques, he explored the emergent pattern of activity of the so-called "slow waves" and how they could be modulated in order to shed light on the physiological and pathological mechanisms of the cerebral cortex. Now, the doctoral school has selected his thesis as one of the winners of the 2024 Special Doctoral Awards in the Science category.
