The accreditation of research centres as Institutes for Health Research (Institutos de Investigación Sanitaria, IIS) is an initiative of the Carlos III Health Institute (ISCIII), aimed at supervising and consolidating the work done by research centres linked to health institutions.
Among other things, the assessment, which is carried out by means of an audit, evaluates how the IIS are constituted, the way they work and the results obtained by the health research institute's research groups and support units. It analyses the orientation towards the needs of the population, the organization’s transparency, ethics and best practice in all its actions, the quality and scientific relevance of the results achieved, and the changes or innovations they make in the health care provided.
IDIBAPS was one of the first five Institutes for Health Research (IIS) accredited by ISCIII in early 2009. The IIS regulations require a periodic evaluation, every 5 years, of the institute's functioning and results. In the case of IDIBAPS, reaccreditations were achieved in 2014 and 2019 and now the 2024 reaccreditation has also been obtained. The next one is scheduled for 2029.
IDIBAPS is one of the 35 accredited institutes for health research.
This accreditation enables it to apply for specific calls for proposals by the ISCIII Strategic Action in Health, and allows it to obtain a greater number of grants for the hiring of research staff (Río Hortega, Juan Rodés, Miguel Servet, etc.) compared to other centres that are not accredited.
