Research is an activity that has considerable environmental impact. Many single-use items are used, for example, which generate tons of plastic waste. Conducting experiments and storing and analysing the results requires machinery and equipment that consume a lot of energy. Research work also involves a large amount of travel to attend conferences and congresses.
In response, initiatives aimed at making research laboratories more sustainable have been implemented around the world. IDIBAPS is committed to promoting more sustainable practices to can reduce the environmental impact of its activities. That is why, among other initiatives, the Committee on Sustainability was set up in mid-2022. The Committee, which has drawn up a manual of good practices, also studies and recommends measures that can be applied to our environment to reduce the impact generated by research.
