Experiments in mice show that the brain can modulate the composition of the intestinal microbiota

A study led by the Clínic-IDIBAPS, Universidad de Santiago de Compostela and UCLouvain (Brussels), published in Nature Metabolism, has shown that the brain, and more specifically certain hypothalamic neurons, is capable of modifying the composition of the intestinal microbiota in mice; and it can do so in a matter of hours. This discovery represents a paradigm shift that expands the regulation of the gut microbiota beyond diet and circadian rhythms.
