The ceremony was chaired by vice-president of research, Matthieu Arlat, who presented the award to Elías Campo, director of IDIBAPS, professor of Anatomical Pathology at the University of Barcelona and head of the Molecular pathology of lymphoid neoplasms group, in recognition of his scientific career and his contributions to science.
“It is an honour to receive this recognition from such a prestigious institution that consolidates the scientific relationship and collaborations with researchers from the University of Toulouse, which we have maintained for over 25 years”, says Elías Campo.
The award recognizes the long history of collaboration between Elias Campo and researchers from the University of Toulouse for more than 20 years, initially with Georges Delsol and currently with Pierre Brousset, which has expanded to other IDIBAPS researchers such as Patricia Pérez-Galán and Christine Bezombes from the University of Toulouse with joint projects funded by the European Community.
His research focuses on the study of the genetic and molecular mechanisms involved in the pathogenesis of lymphoid neoplasms, in order to improve the diagnosis of these tumours, predict their evolution and identify the most effective treatments. Due to the contributions he has made in the field of oncology, he has received numerous awards and prizes throughout his career, including the National Research Award-Catalonia (2013), the Rei Jaume I Award for Medical Research (2016), the Gregorio Marañón National Research Award (2020), the José Carreras Award of the European Haematology Association (2021), the Fred W. Stewart Award of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (2021) and the ASEICA Cancer Research Award (2022). He has also been a member of the US National Academy of Medicine since 2019.
During the ceremony, Gregory Ciottone from Harvard Medical School, Jacques Côté from Laval University, Tsuyoshi Kawai from the Nara Institute of Science and Technology, and Luis Martínez-Salamero from Rovira i Virgili University were also awarded honorary doctorates.
