During the talk he explained that we cannot know whether these mitochondrial abnormalities are a cause or consequence of the disease. However, the discovery might be of great importance because there are no precise ways to diagnose Alzheimer's disease, and it is one of the great challenges of modern biomedicine. After the presentation there was a long discussion with the audience, which evidenced that both Alzheimer's disease and the transversal role of mitochondria in different diseases are a hot topic. The results of the team led by Dr. Ramon Trullàs were recently published in the Annals of Neurology.
