The project entitled "Epigenetic Regulation of BDNF Expression According to Response to Cognitive Remediation in Schizophrenia" has been awarded with a 2016 NARSAD Independent Investigator Grant and it will last for two years. It will allow investigating the therapeutic effects of cognitive rehabilitation therapy on brain chemistry. There will be studied whether improvements associated with cognitive rehabilitation treatment are associated with epigenetic changes. These results may influence clinical practice facilitating the personalization of treatments and therapies opening new therapeutic windows.
This grant will allow the consolidation of the research lines developed by the Schizophrenia Unit at Hospital Clínic de Barcelona led by Dr. Miquel Bernardo. Besides the healthcare and teaching tasks, this Unit is a consolidated research group recognized by the AGAUR and it is part of the IDIBAPS and CIBERSAM. Neuropsychopharmacology, neuroimage and genetics, high-risk and early episodes and physical health are other consolidated research lines.
