Dr. Moisès Broggi i Vallès: A role model

The dawn of 30 December, Dr. Moises Broggi i Vallès died at 104 years in Barcelona. Dr. Broggi had a long career in which he was recognized with several prizes as well as being considered one of the founders of bioethics in our country. Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery at the University of Barcelona, at the beginning of the Spanish Civil War he served as a doctor on call in the emergency department of the Clínic. He took part in the war for the Republican side, being the head of the surgical team of the International Brigades. Once the war ended, he returned to the Clínic where he practiced as a surgeon. The Franco regime disqualified him for public practice. For this reason he had to work in the private health system, operating until he was 85.

In 1966 he entered the Royal Academy of Medicine of Catalonia, he chaired this institution between 1980 and 1993. Besides physician, Dr. Broggi will be remembered as a great humanitarian and a great Catalan. Considered one of the pioneers of bioethics in the country, he was one of the founders of the International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War, an organization that won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1985. A recognized defensor of the catalan independence, during the last years of his life was actively involved in this defense. The last official act that he went was the establishment of the National Assembly Catalana (ANC), on March 10 at the Palau Sant Jorid. Moisès Broggi is a role model: a great doctor, a great person and an involved citizen. We want to express our sincere condolences to the family.
