The International Hans Popper Award was presented for the seventh time on the occasion of the Falk Symposium 186. Dr. Pere Ginés, another investigator from IDIBAPS – Hospital Clínic, received this honour in 2006. The prize is awarded for outstanding contributors to basic and experimental hepatology, including molecular genetics, molecular biology, physiology, biochemistry and pathology of acute and chronic liver diseases and its sequelae. During the ceremony, Dr. Jordi Bruix and Dr. Josep Maria Llovet offered a conference titled “Hepatocellular carcinoma: The BCLC approach to clinical and translational research”.

The Barcelona Clínic Liver Cancer (BCLC) is the international classification that stratifies patients according to outcome, and links it with a treatment indication. Dr. Jordi Bruix, head of the IDIBAPS – Hospital Clínic Hepatic Oncology research group, and Dr. Josep Maria Llovet, ICREA Professor at IDIBAPS and Director of the HCC Research Program at Mount Sinai School of Medicine (New York), lead the research team that, after 25 years since its creation, keeps in front of the international efforts against liver cancer. Both received the Falk Foundation’s International Hans Popper Award in Mainz (Germany) on October 5th.
