This agreement establishes a joint collaboration framework for all the institutions, in order to promote urban development for the construction of the new campus at the University of Barcelona’s sports facilities. The extension of the Hospital Clínic and the relocation of the UB’s Faculty of Medicine are intended to increase their potential, including the enhancement of their healthcare, university, scientific and technological excellence. They are also committed to sustainability from an environmental, economic and social point of view.
The Hospital Clínic Barcelona is a leading hospital facility, with a clinical capacity of the highest level and cutting-edge technology. It is firmly committed to university teaching and scientific research. It is one of the most important healthcare complexes both in the country and in Europe.
This new campus, which responds to the needs for growth, improved service and excellence, will include the extension of the Hospital, the University of Barcelona’s Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences and other healthcare, university, scientific and research facilities that are agreed on.
The local administrations involved, together with the Generalitat de Catalunya, will promote urban planning measures and plan public and private transport and the required accessibility.
The future construction of the new facilities will allow the hospital’s Villarroel, Plató and Maternity Hospital centres to be maintained, in order to meet the needs of the referral population. The hospital’s current location in the Eixample district will include healthcare, teaching, research and innovation services, which will be maintained, as well as new municipal facilities and the expansion of public space.
Dr. Josep M. Campistol, director general of the Hospital Clínic Barcelona, is very positive about the signing of this binding agreement: “from the very outset, all the institutions have been committed to going ahead with this project, which meets a priority need for citizens, and now all the machinery is being set in motion to make it a reality". "At the Hospital, we are already working on the functional plan to define the uses of the new facilities, which will be a new hub that must continue to place Catalonia at the forefront in the field of health, both in Europe and the world”, he adds.
Defining the future of the Hospital Clínic
In February 2021, the Generalitat de Catalunya, through the Ministry of Health, Barcelona City Council and Barcelona Provincial Council, signed a preliminary Protocol designed to study the possible sites for the future new complex.
The architecture/town planning and healthcare coordination commissions that participated in this study issued a report at the end of that year proposing a new location for this project, the site currently occupied by the University of Barcelona's sports courts.
In May 2022, a new Protocol was signed, extending the collaboration to the University of Barcelona and the Hospital Clínic de Barcelona Consortium, to evaluate this proposal. As a result of the application of this collaboration instrument, in February 2023 an agreement was reached between all the participating institutions establishing the suitability and viability of this site for the purpose of locating the healthcare, teaching, research and innovation activities of the future Hospital Clínic Barcelona.
