Recent research shows that a fake body part can be incorporated into human body representation through synchronous multisensory stimulation on the fake and corresponding real body part. An article published in PLoS ONE virtual reality was used to induce the perception of having an arm three or four times longer than a true limb would be, even when this is so long that it means a huge asymmetry in the body.
The article was entitled "Extending body in space Immersive virtual reality: a very long arm illusion", with the following researchers among the authors: Mel Slater, Konstantina Kilteni and Jean-Marie Normand, from the Event Lab at the University of Barcelona Faculty of Psychology and the Institució Catalana de Recerca i Estudis Avançats (ICREA), and Maria V. Sánchez-Vives, from the Institut d’Investigacions Biomèdiques August Pi i Sunyer (IDIBAPS) and ICREA.
