Gynecology, human reproduction and women´s health

Problem

There are still many unknown aspects of gynecological pathology, both benign and malignant On the one hand, it is necessary to obtain early diagnostic tools, improve treatments and optimize follow-up to ensure the safety of our patients. But it is also necessary to integrate into this knowledge the improvement of quality of life and to encourage our patients to be involved in decision-making. On the other hand, it is essential to deepen our knowledge of the etiopathogenesis and treatment of different gynecological processes, including reproductive failure.

Approach

Our group carries out clinical and translational research. The members of the team are part of the Gynecology Service of the Hospital Clínic, a third level reference center for complex gynecological pathology, which allows us to develop our research in direct contact with patients and their pathology. The main health issues that focus our research are endometriosis and adenomyosis, sterility and reproductive failure, cervical pathology and human papillomavirus, endocrine disorders and sexual dysfunctions, as well as oncological gynecological pathology.

Impact

We have made advances in the diagnosis, molecular basis and treatment of endometriosis and adenomyosis. We have also deepened in the impact of gynecological diseases, quality of life and sexual quality, as well as the effect of hormonal treatments. Likewise, we have performed the first uterine transplant at the national level, and we have progressed in the implementation of robotic surgery in gynecological pathology. We have improved our knowledge of gynecological malignant tumors and their surgical approach, as well as the study of premalignant lesions and vaccines against human papillomavirus, too. Finally, we have progressed in the knowledge of reproductive failure and fertility preservation.
