Symptoms of Pre-eclampsia

Reading time: 1 min

Pre-eclampsia can appear without the patient realising, so proper testing during pregnancy is important to detect it.

At each visit the doctor should take the patient’s blood pressure and, if necessary, perform a urine test for excess protein.

The symptoms of pre-eclampsia are:

  • Excessive swelling in the face or hands.
  • Blinding headaches.
  • Excessive vomiting.
  • Vision disturbances (e.g. blurred or double vision, seeing stars).
  • Severe pain in the upper abdomen or shoulder.
  • Difficulty breathing.
