Lung Cancer Research at the Clínic

Reading time: 2 min

At the Hospital Clínic, Barcelona, the team of professionals responsible for caring for patients with Lung Cancer is continuously working on research and innovative projects, both at the healthcare and technological level.

The professionals carry out research within the framework of the August Pi i Sunyer Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBAPS), in the Oncology and Haematology Area, the Translational Genomics and Targeted Therapies in Solid Tumours Group; as well as in collaboration with the Faculty of Medicine, specifically with the Human Anatomy and Embryology Unit, the Department of Surgery and Medical-Surgical Specialities and the Biophysics Unit, Department of Biomedicine.

Lung cancer treatment innovation promoted by the healthcare team can be classified into two types: technological and healthcare.

Technological innovation

  • Robotic surgery Keyhole surgery, and specifically robotics, is a superior technology to thoracoscopic surgery which allows us to perform the same type of surgery using between one and four small incisions. This has a clear benefit for patient recovery and postoperative pain control, while making it possible to provide surgical treatments for patients with higher morbidity and mortality and increasing patient survival. The synergy between biomedical engineering and surgery provides highly advanced technology for performing the least aggressive surgery possible.
  • Endobronchial Ultrasound (EBUS) in the staging and molecular diagnosis of lung cancer.
  • New radiofrequency and radiosurgery techniques for the radical treatment of lung tumours.
  • Massive sequencing technologies for the molecular characterisation of lung cancer patient tissue.
  • Liquid biopsy for the molecular characterisation of lung cancer patients using a blood sample.
  • ROLL (Radioguided Occult Lesion Localisation) technique for marking lung lesions prior to surgical resection.

Healthcare innovation

  • Clinical Trials Unit.
  • Research into new biological therapies.
  • Home immunological therapy service.
  • Specialised Advanced Practice Nursing care (IPA).
  • Specialised Multidisciplinary Consultation in the treatment of addictions and complex smoking.
  • Surgical preparation programmes for patients treated with induction immunotherapy and patients at high postoperative risk.
  • Hyperthermic Intrapleural chemotherapy (HIPEC) in the treatment of Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma
  • Thoracic ultrasound-guided interventional procedures in pleural and pulmonary pathologies.
  • Evaluation of new visualisation tools to support the thoracic tumours committee.
