Intrauterine Growth Restriction Prognosis

Reading time: 1 min

If the evaluation of the Doppler study of the placenta and baby is normal, and all possible causes have been ruled out, development is generally good and testing will be required every 2-3 weeks.

However, if an anomaly is detected in the Doppler study of the placenta and baby, development is more uncertain and can range from stable to showing deterioration. Thus, more frequent testing is recommended, depending on the anomaly.

If the baby does not grow properly or there are alterations in the functioning of the placenta or in the baby's tolerance, the professional opinion may be to deliver the baby early.

The vast majority of small babies can opt for vaginal delivery, although their tolerance for this type of delivery is worse. Only those cases that require very premature termination or those with a serious problem in the functioning of the placenta will be candidates for a direct caesarean section.

In some cases, these young babies must stay in the hospital until they are of a sufficient weight to go home.
