The main lines of global research are as follows, with the ultimate goal of finding a treatment to prevent and/or cure the disease:

  • In vitro studies. The properties of the normal protein and the pathological prion protein are evaluated and pharmacological modifications are studied in the laboratory.
  • The drugs currently under research are involved in pre-clinical studies. Animal models are used to evaluate the effectiveness of new medicines prior to them being used in humans. These models assess the mechanisms that induce a protein to develop into a ‘diseased’ prion form, and how it causes damage to the brain tissue.
  • Existing clinical studies are conducted in patients and at-risk subjects to improve diagnostic and prognostic tools. There are currently no drug studies in which new patients diagnosed with prion diseases can participate.
