Treatment of Amebiasis

Reading time: 1 min

Intestinal amebiasis is treated in two stages: First, an antimicrobial drug is administered, such as metronidazole or tinidazole, which acts by destroying amoebas, and then paromomycin is administered to eliminate cysts and to prevent relapses.

It is important to not drink alcohol during treatment and for some days afterwards, as it can interact with the medication and cause vomiting, hot flashes and headaches.
