Antoni Torres is a senior consultant at the Hospital Clínic, head of the IDIBAPS Applied research in infectious respiratory diseases and critically ill patients group and Professor of Pulmonology at the University of Barcelona. His research is based on studying respiratory diseases based on cellular and molecular responses, in order to obtain clinical results. His outstanding career has been recognized with several awards such as the Edward Shanoff Award (Harvard University), the Josep Trueta Award (Generalitat de Catalunya) and an ICREA Acadèmia Grant.
His group has described measures to prevent nosocomial pneumonia and criteria for admitting patients with community-acquired pneumonia to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), which have been universally adopted. This is why the European Respiratory Society (ERS) chose to recognize Antoni Torres's work with the “Lifetime Achievement Award in Respiratory Infections” at the ERS Congress 2024 in Vienna.
Each year, the ERS presents a series of prestigious awards to recognize scientific merit and commitment to society, honouring exceptional members for their exemplary achievements and potential for future developments in all respiratory areas.
