On Tuesday, May 24, 2022, took place the Closing ceremony of the academic year 2021-2022 and the presentation of Awards and Scholarships commemorating the 150th anniversary of the Academy. During the session, Anna Novials, leader of the IDIBAPS group Pathogenesis and Prevention of Diabetes and CIBERDEM, received the Josep Trueta 2022 Award. The award recognizes the research trajectory, individually or by research groups, within the field of health sciences, which in the last five years has resulted in one or more scientific publications worldwide, which are considered to have the best qualities.
The Novials' team combines clinical and basic research to better understand diabetes and create innovative methods of treatment and prevention, with lifestyle interventions. In 2018, the researchers received a Research Award, also from the Academy, for developing the project "Exercise-induced exosomal microRNAs as regulators of metabolism." It studied the role of exosomal microRNAs, small RNA molecules that circulate in the blood inside vesicles called exosomes, and analyzed how exercise altered their expression pattern in humans and mice.
Novials is a physician specialized in endocrinology at Hospital Clínic-IDIBAPS. Since 2010, she has been a member of the Executive Committee of the Center for Biomedical Research in Diabetes and Associated Metabolic Disorders (CIBERDEM), a member of the Council of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (2012-2015) and president of the Spanish Diabetes Society (2017-2020).
