Respiratory biophysics and bioengineering
Appointment of Ramon Farré, Group leader (R4-UB)
The application of the concepts and laws of physics to the human body is of great help for better understanding of how diseases change functioning, as well as to aid in designing better diagnostic and therapeutic devices

Group leader (R4-UB)
Current research
Problem
The application of advanced biophysical techniques is essential for improving diagnostic tools as well as to optimise therapeutic devices for respiratory diseases.
Approach
The group studies the biophysical mechanisms that determine respiratory function in health and disease.
Impact
The group has provided some keys for a better understanding of certain respiratory diseases linked to hypoxia, and to advance in lung tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. It is also improving our therapeutic (respiratory support) tools, such as systems for evaluating the quality of devices used to treat obstructive sleep apnea and mechanical ventilation.
